Life at 3001 Van Buren Place

We have found the cure for the empty nest syndrome! Just don’t let the nest get empty! Gwen and I are so pleased to have the opportunity to live in community with our new “family” here near University of Southern California. Our “girls” (Quan, Yuting and Kaori) moved in the last part of August and we enjoyed our first of many meals together. Adjustments have been very minimal as these three students began classes and have gotten into a routine schedule.

We moved into our new digs the last day of July and spent most of the month of August, cleaning and unpacking. Thanks to Valley Community Church of Newhall, CA we were able to purchase desks for each of the students. With painting and shopping all done, our new arrivals came a different days which helped with logistics.

Quan, arrived on August 20th and we got to be the very first to meet her at LAX international airport. Yuting, who has been in our home since May, has been a huge blessing, driving her new roommate around town and getting her settled.

Kaori moved her things in mid-August but made herself at home on the 25th. Gwen has had fun, teaching a bit of cooking and I got to show off my skills as a grill master.

I would say the biggest blessing has been the privilege of taking our students to church at Covina Assembly. It was a wonderful time and resulted in many questions and observations.

As for the neighborhood, the best way to describe it is “interesting.” This is a very mixed community and often times we are reminded of Mexico, with familiar sounds of street vendors and neighborhood parties in the air. It has not been unusual for a fire truck or police vehicle (helicopters included) to visit the “hood”.

We would ask you to pray for each of our students, for their studies, safety and cultural adjustments. Most of all pray for the spiritual journey each one of them is taking.
