Crossing over

It never ceases to amaze me - the power of a few words when spoken from the heart! You know those few simple words shared in a sinner’s prayer? A simple confession of shame, a need for forgiveness, an acknowledgment of Christ as the risen Son of God and a trust in Him alone for eternal life can change a life. I know because I just recently witnessed it!

We were at our very first west coast international student conference with students from 12 different nations. Our guest speaker, Virginia Contreras, a lawyer, former international student, and now a missionary with her husband, Gilbert, had just finished speaking about the challenges of crossing over to the other side (both culturally and spiritually). A general prayer was given and all of us in the room, both believer and seeker, were invited to repeat those simple words. The service concluded and I turned to my Asian friend from USC and asked him what he thought of the evening’s activities. There was an unusual glow on his face, a look of life I had not seen in the months of investigative Bible study we had shared together. His response was immediate and emphatic, “Good prayer, very good prayer! Thank you Jerry, thank you Jesus!”

We sat and talked about what had just happened, and I welcomed him into the kingdom of God! Later that night as we traveled home, my friend, began to share with me ideas for reaching more international students! He knew what he had was real and he wanted others to find it too!

I was astounded as I listened to this doctoral student apply his understanding of his field of study to the need of the spreading of the gospel. I realized then how often the first concern of a new citizen of the Kingdom of God is the very heart of the King, to reach others with this great hope!

Thank you for the privilege of being able to witness this miracle of crossing over. Because of your giving and praying so faithfully we are able to minister this mystery of God’s grace to individuals who are being changed.
