What do you have in your hand?

Jerry and Gwen

At key points in our lives we find ourselves asking God if he has thought through the things he is asking of you and me. “God, are you sure you want me to do this?” When God met Moses in the desert and informed him he would be the deliverer of Israel, Moses challenged this wisdom with all kinds of complicated objections. God asked a simple question, “Moses, what do you have in your hand?” “A staff,” came the reply. A shepherd staff (basically a wooden stick) was both a useful tool and a symbol of personal life history. Moses’ staff was representative of his 40 years of experience,

his skill set, and his future. It was to be the raw material through which God would show up and show off.

So when Gwen and I were asked to take on the responsibilities of leading the team at International Media Ministries in Madrid, Spain, I felt the same complicating objections. “God are you sure you got the right guy?” God’s simple question comes into focus again, “Jerry, what do you have in your hand?” What does my staff look like?

So here is a list of my composite staff.

  • 30 years of focusing on sharing Christ with, discipling, and releasing students for God’s purposes
  • Master of Science in Administrative Studies with an emphasis in Organizational Leadership.
  • Love for Spanish language
  • Multiple Culture exposure through international students.
  • Working in a team environment with young leaders with a passion to serve God.

Obviously, I’m no Moses! Yet the comparison for all of us is simple. The experiences and life skills you are developing right now are preparation for what is ahead. And like Moses, the key to any great story is not how impressive the skill sets are, rather it is about how great God is in using that stick in Moses’ hand to demonstrate His power to the world. Remember, the staff was just a stick until Moses threw it down and God took over. I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to throw down and see what God will make of it!

Thanks for being part of our support team!
